College Fantasy Football: Week 2 Transfer Targets and Waiver Wire Adds

Two ways to play college fantasy football: the CollegeFFB salary cap model, where "waivers" means spending one of your three weekly transfers, and traditional draft leagues, where you're working the actual waiver wire. Everything below works for both, and where the two diverge I'll say so. Draft numbers come from BlueChip, our preferred app for CFF drafts, plus Yahoo ownership as a more casual, Power Four only reference point.

Five QBs, RBs, WRs and three TEs.

Prices move in CollegeFFB. Most of these guys are getting more expensive after Week 1, so what's listed is pre-update.

Last thing: I can't watch every game. If you love a guy on your team, take him. Odds are I just missed it.

Quarterbacks

1) Lincoln Kienholz, Louisville, $7.0M

  • Yahoo rostered: 2%

If you didn't watch the Ole Miss vs Louisville game on Sunday night, you missed out. Trinidad Chambliss did Trinidad Chambliss things and pulled out another clutch win, but that's almost to be expected at this point.

What I was incredibly impressed by was the performance of Louisville QB Lincoln Kienholz. Reports out of camp this summer were super promising, but I always take those reports with a grain of salt. I was wrong. They undersold him.

Kienholz came exactly as advertised. He was poised in the pocket and patient as a runner, and that was in a game under the lights against Ole Miss, likely their most difficult opponent of the year. I am expecting video game numbers in Week 2 against Villanova (I'm just hoping he's not being rested by halftime).

Buy, buy, buy. Oh, and if I didn't mention it, you should buy Lincoln Kienholz.

2) Austin Simmons, Missouri, $7.0M

  • Fantasy Points: 25.9
  • Week 1: Passing: 252 yds and 4 TDs
  • Week 2 matchup: Kansas
  • BlueChip rostered: 74%
  • Yahoo rostered: 2%

Man, you gotta be happy for Austin Simmons after that performance. Expectations for him were sky high entering last year at Ole Miss under Lane Kiffin. Then the wheels fell off. Rough opening performance, got hurt, and little did anyone know that one of the best QBs in the country in Trinidad Chambliss was waiting in the wings.

We never got to see if Simmons was able to turn things around, so as a result there were a ton of question marks coming into this season about how he'd perform at Missouri. And, look, Arkansas-Pine Bluff isn't exactly the litmus test for "is this guy going to be a great QB," but my eyes tell me that Simmons is going to be electric this year.

He's got weapons around him in Olugbode and Lee that he seems to trust, and the impending return of Ahmad Hardy should take up a lot of focus from opposing defenses. We're rooting for Simmons here at CollegeFFB.

3) Faizon Brandon, Tennessee, $6.5M

  • Fantasy Points: 39.8
  • Week 1: Passing: 226 yards and 3 TD; Rushing: 68 Yards and 2 TD
  • Week 2 matchup: Georgia Tech
  • BlueChip rostered: 59%
  • Yahoo rostered: 9%

Of everyone on this QB list, Faizon Brandon had the most impressive performance. He's a true freshman. He throws a beautiful deep ball. He gets it done with his legs. He put up nearly 40 fantasy points and I think he was done before the midway point of the third quarter.

This kid is going to be special. He's a freshman, so expect some ups and downs, but I'm all in at his current price, especially considering how fantasy-friendly the Tennessee offense has been in recent years.

4) Mason Heintschel, Pittsburgh, $7.5M

  • Fantasy Points: 48.4
  • Week 1: Passing: 453 yards and 7 TDs, Rushing: 23 yards
  • Week 2 matchup: UCF
  • BlueChip rostered: 77%
  • Yahoo rostered: 9%

Honestly, Pitt vs Miami (OH) was not high up on my watchlist this weekend, so this is primarily based on the stat line, but... 453 YARDS AND 7 TDS ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME????

What a monster stat line. It's one you can't ignore. And PFF had him as the sixth-highest-rated QB from this weekend. I'm trusting the numbers and PFF on this one, and so should you.

5) Cutter Boley, Arizona State, $5.5M

  • Fantasy Points: 37.3
  • Week 1: Passing: 367 yards and 6 TD; 1 Fumble
  • Week 2 matchup: Texas A&M
  • BlueChip rostered: 65%
  • Yahoo rostered: 2%

Boley is the cheapest QB in CollegeFFB we have on this list, but it was an impressive performance against... Morgan State. Look, I still want to see more before I'm ready to make him a starter, but Boley certainly did enough to justify a spot on your roster.

What we do know from Week 1 is that Kenny Dillingham is still a great offensive college football coach, and Omarion Miller and Reed Harriss might be one of the best WR duos in the country.

His cost is more than justified. I'd just temper expectations for his Week 2 matchup vs Texas A&M.

Running Backs

1) Jamal Rule, Nebraska, $5.5M

  • Fantasy Points: 36.9
  • Week 1: Rushing: 122 yards and 2 TDs, Receiving: 2 rec, 47 yards and 1 TD
  • Week 2 matchup: Bowling Green State
  • BlueChip rostered: 51%
  • Yahoo rostered: 3%

Jamal Rule came into the season on a ton of people's watchlists with the hope that the freshman back could break onto the fantasy scene by the end of the season. Welp, it only took him about one quarter of football to do that.

Rule looked absolutely electric, and if Nebraska is going to have any chance of turning things around this year, Rule is going to need to be a massive part of that. I love his Week 2 matchup against a Bowling Green team that just lost to Tarleton State.

Rule and the Huskers get NDSU, Michigan State, and Maryland before things stiffen up in Week 6, so I think he's going to produce some massive numbers in the short term.

2) Jaylin Carter, Memphis, $7.0M

  • Fantasy Points: 45.1
  • Week 1: Rushing: 183 yards and 4 TD; Receiving: 1 rec, 18 yards
  • Week 2 matchup: at Boise State
  • BlueChip rostered: 6%
  • Yahoo Rostered: 0% (outside of P4 + ND only pool)

Carter looked solid in Week 0 against a highly rated UNLV team, but he went absolutely ballistic in Week 1 vs Arkansas State and ended as the fourth-highest-scoring player in the entire FBS.

He's a legit bellcow RB1 on a really solid Memphis team. I love him the rest of the year. I don't love him against Boise in Week 2.

So this is where the divergence happens. He's going to be popular and you should absolutely grab him off waivers in a draft league. Get him rostered now and eat one bad week if it comes.

In CollegeFFB I'm waiting. I'd rather spend the transfer when he draws a defense that didn't just bottle up No. 2 Oregon.

3) Dilin Jones, LSU, $6.5M

  • Fantasy Points: 24.4
  • Week 1: Rushing: 113 yards and 2 TD; Receiving: 1 rec, 1 yard
  • Week 2 matchup: Louisiana Tech
  • BlueChip rostered: 54%
  • Yahoo rostered: 70%

I can already hear LSU fans screaming at me not to jinx this, but I can't write this article without mentioning Dilin Jones.

LSU hasn't had a feature back they could rely on in recent years. Jones may have finally answered Baton Rouge's prayers Saturday night as the Tigers demolished Clemson.

It's a Lane Kiffin offense. LSU is going to put up some stupid numbers. And hey, remind me, who was that running back Kiffin coached up at Ole Miss last year? Kewan something? It'll come to me.


4) Jeffery Overton, Virginia Tech, $4.5M

  • Fantasy Points: 22.4
  • Week 1: Rushing: 104 yards and 2 TDs
  • Week 2 matchup: Old Dominion
  • BlueChip rostered: 25.2%
  • Yahoo rostered: 23%

If you're going to make a claim on Overton, you should know that he's behind Marcellous Hawkins ($6.0M) on the Hokies depth chart. That out of the way, I do not care.

For context, I'm a Penn State guy and for the most part I'm pretty grateful for everything James Franklin did for the program. Franklin is now the head coach at Virginia Tech, and if you're not familiar, he's a big fan of a two-back system.

I think Hawkins and Overton will be the new version of Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, but Overton is more widely available and is $1.5M cheaper.

I think VT with their super experienced O-line is just going to pound the ever-living hell out of the ball this year, and I think they can realistically be undefeated going into their Week 9 bye.

Overton is a bet on the system I think Franklin is going to instill, and the schedule is very enticing as well. Consider this my flag plant of the post.

5) Anthony Woods, UCLA, $4.5M

  • Fantasy Points: 24.9
  • Week 1: Rushing: 118 yards and 2 TD; Receiving: 1 red, 1 yard
  • Week 2 matchup: San Diego State
  • BlueChip rostered: 86.5%
  • Yahoo rostered: 2%

Bob Chesney is now the head coach at UCLA, and the Bruins put on a running clinic in Week 1 vs Cal. Wayne Knight ($7.0M) is the lead back, and while he had one more TD than Woods, he had the same number of carries and about 40 fewer yards. That's a split, not a hierarchy. I think both will be fantasy-relevant this year, though I'm a little worried about Nico Iamaleava vulturing rushing TDs from the pair of them.

My hesitance here is admittedly less about the players than about me. I've watched James Franklin every fall Saturday for a decade. I have not watched nearly enough Bob Chesney. So if you prefer Woods to Overton, I couldn't blame you.

Wide Receivers

1) Koby Howard, Penn State, $4.5M

  • Fantasy Points: 28.1
  • Week 1: Receiving: 6 rec, 161 yards and 1 TD
  • Week 2 matchup: Temple
  • BlueChip rostered: 36%
  • Yahoo rostered: 1%

This guy is un-flipping-believable. And yeah, I already outed myself as a Penn State homer, but if you don't like it, tough luck.

I stashed him on my CollegeFFB bench last year off nothing but high school tape and spring game highlights. A reach at the time. Total reach. And then Week 1 this year hit and gave me the sweetest vindication I've felt in this game.

The path to WR1 in the Penn State offense is wide open, and Koby spent Week 1 proving he's the guy who should be walking through it. He's a human joystick. Great hands, and the kind of quickness that's going to make Big Ten secondaries look outright foolish this fall.

I know I'm a homer. Doesn't matter. He's coming into my CollegeFFB team and he's my top waiver priority in the draft league I'm in.

2) Donovan Olugbode, Missouri, $6.0M

  • Fantasy Points: 29.6
  • Week 1: Receiving: 8 rec, 116 yards and 2 TDs
  • Week 2 matchup: Kansas
  • BlueChip rostered: 69%
  • Yahoo rostered: 8%

Tied to my Austin Simmons take from earlier in this article, Olugbode appears to be the No. 1 WR in the Missouri offense and already has a great connection with Simmons.

Transparently, I thought Cayden Lee might be the top target in this offense, but he seems more limited to a slot role. Olugbode looks like a clear alpha WR1, and I think he and Simmons will make some waves this year.

There are not many mid-tier priced receivers I am starting over Olugbode the rest of this year.

Trent Mosley, USC, $5.0M

  • Fantasy Points: 26.4
  • Week 1: Receiving: 4 rec, 104 yards and 2 TD
  • Week 2 matchup: Louisiana-Lafayette
  • BlueChip rostered: 47%
  • Yahoo rostered: 16%

I'll be shocked if Trent Mosley isn't pushing 90% rostered by Week 4 this year. The true freshman put on a show for us in Week 0, then followed it up with another two-TD performance in Week 1.

What was particularly great about his Week 1 performance is that he did it with Tanook Hines back in the lineup. I think Mosley is going to be this year's Malachi Toney, a true freshman who's a volume and TD monster in a top offense. If there's any chance to still get him on your roster, you should take it.

4) Tony Diaz, Iowa, $4.5M

  • Fantasy Points: 22.4
  • Week 1: Receiving: 7 rec, 84 yards and 1 TD; Rushing: 10 yards
  • Week 2 matchup: Iowa State
  • BlueChip rostered: 4%
  • Yahoo rostered: 2%

It is abundantly clear Tony Diaz is a fantastic wide receiver. Great hands. Great body control. Great route running. Nothing to ding him on.

The biggest question mark was about Iowa throwing the football enough to support a fantasy-relevant WR. And the answer is... kinda?

Hank Brown, their starting QB, only threw for 129 yards on 20 attempts, and this was against NIU. The good thing is that $4.5M is the cheapest price in CollegeFFB, so the risk here is relatively low. I think he'll have some big spike weeks, but there will be weeks where Iowa only throws for 150 yards and half of those go to three different tight ends.

5) Malachi Coleman, Wisconsin, $4.5M

  • Fantasy Points: 17.6
  • Week 1: Receiving: 4 rec, 76 yards and 1 TD
  • Week 2 matchup: Western Illinois
  • BlueChip rostered: 14%
  • Yahoo rostered: 0%

Malachi Coleman had the lowest stat line of anyone on this list who isn't a tight end, but my god does this guy look special.

Wisconsin played Notre Dame very well up until the end of the third quarter, and Coleman was a big reason why. The way this guy runs routes and separates, mind you against one of the best secondaries in the country, was mind boggling.

I think Wisconsin can be in for a bit of a bounce-back year with Colton Joseph at QB, and I think Coleman will be the best fantasy option from that offense.

Tight Ends

1) Mason Mini, California, $5.5M

  • Fantasy Points: 15.8
  • Week 1: Receiving: 4 rec, 58 yards, 1 TD
  • Week 2 matchup: Syracuse
  • BlueChip rostered: 70%
  • Yahoo rostered: 57%

The Tight End position in college fantasy football is not a fun place to be looking for waiver wire diamonds. There’s a good chance Mini is already taken in your league, but in the off chance he is not, I think he might be one of a handful of reliable college fantasy football Tight Ends this year.

He appears to be CFF darling Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele’s second favorite target behind Ian Strong, so honestly that’s good enough for me. In CollegeFFB, I think he’s much better value than some of the premium guys in the game.

2) Rocky Beers, Oklahoma, $5.5M

  • Fantasy Points: 12.3
  • Week 1: Receiving: 2 rec, 43 yards and a TD
  • Week 2 matchup: Michigan
  • BlueChip rostered: 64%
  • Yahoo rostered: 7%

Two reasons here.

One, his name is Rocky Beers. That alone is reason enough to roster him.

Two, he hurdled a man on the way to a touchdown this weekend and the internet lost its mind about it. Now I want him to be the next Brock Bowers. He probably won’t be. But I’m cheering for you, Rocky Beers.

3) Jeremiah Scoby, Bowling Green, $4.5M

  • Fantasy Points: 20.2
  • Week 1: Receiving: 10 rec, 102 yards
  • Week 2 matchup: Nebraska
  • BlueChip rostered: 0%
  • Yahoo rostered: 0% (not in available P4 + ND player pool)

You've never heard of this guy, and he just finished as the top scoring TE in Week 1 of college fantasy football.

Scoby is a hybrid receiver listed at tight end, which is exactly the kind of thing that wins you a CFF matchup from the tight end spot. Ten catches and over 100 yards in Week 1 gave me flashbacks to Harold Fannin putting up video game numbers as the Bowling Green starting tight end.

At $4.5M it's a gamble worth taking. And honestly, did any other TE really look good enough to justify spending more?

Final Thoughts

Week 1 was freaking awesome. The college fantasy football community is bigger than ever, the games were great, and fantasy scores were through the roof.

Just remember, college football is massive. No analyst, including me, can watch every player in every game. These are recommendations based on what I observed, but if there's someone else you want to take a shot on, do it.
